Station Eleven Overview Section Six to Section Seven

Section 6 Chapter 41

“Exhaustion. She was desperately hot, then wracked with chills. Her thoughts were disordered. No one came” (Mandel, 227).

Miranda suddenly felt a high fever, realizing that she might have contracted the flu and that is why there is little staff in the hotel. There was a time I had a cold that has been going around for a while. That cold hit me hard with a high fever and it took me a while to get out of bed and take medications for it.

Section 7 Chapter 44

“There seem to be a limitless number of objects in the world that had no practical use, but that people wanted to preserve:” (Mandel, 258).

This quote makes me wonder what I would have saved in this era. Maybe the same things they did, maybe a collection of art. I do appreciate museums and artwork pieces, especially historical artifacts because they leave a great impact.

1.    The airplane serves as both an innovation and the acceleration of a disaster. People who were born after the Georgian Flu cannot fathom being carried up in the air and flying like a bird, hence the airplane is seen as a powerful invention. Because Tyler, the Prophet, remembered being in awe of how large and strong it is, and because he made all of his partners get tattoos of it, the airplane became a potent symbol for him. Disaster was also produced by it. They readily caught the flu thanks to the assistance of airlines and those flying in and out, and as a result, it spread around the world.

2.    The characters are all grown. Kirsten had to be brutal to survive and she has tattoos that symbolize how many people she killed. Clark is now a 70-year-old person who works at a museum in Sovern City. Tyler became adamant about his religious belief, destroying anyone who does not go his way. Jeevan is married to Daria and now is a settlement doctor. There were many ways people found to survive. Some of them were grateful for the small things around us and appreciated the old world they took for granted, some had become strong in their beliefs and said that this is from divine power, and some went insane from the drastic changes.

3.    The museum holds pieces of their memories of the Old World and this also helps them to be grateful for what they have in front of them. This provides them hope that humanity will return to its glory days and reminds them of how the world used to be before the Georgian Flu. If I was building my own “Museum of Civilization”, I would probably be putting technologies of different kinds that I could find in there and manual books on how these technologies were built.

4.    I believe it is a wise decision because, without family, one’s mind will never be at ease and would somehow feel trapped in their own mind. Finding them gives them hope that one day, the whole group and family will reunite again. I think I would draw the line from endangering my family. I don’t think anything is worth endangering my family or city or country because, at the end of the day, I believe that one would have to face the consequences that come with that decision.

Station Eleven Section 4 and 5

1.    Station Eleven Quotes:

Section 4: Chapter 26 (page 159 Mandel)

“” PLEASE TELL ME YOU’RE JOKING.” Clark said when Elizabeth Colton called to tell him about the book.”

This reminds me of the fact that everyone has a skeleton in the closet that they do not want the world to know and if exposed, you feel like there is nowhere in the world that you can hide and there is no guarantee they have not seen the video or picture you were trying to wipe out the whole time.

Section 5: Chapter 30 (page 178 Mandel)

“On silent afternoons in his brother’s apartment, Jeevan found himself thinking about how human the city is, how human everything is.”

This is the start of the chaos, where now Jeevan is with his brother Frank and he realizes the things that he always took for granted like TV, internet, electricity, and so on are actually run by people and without them, the city cannot function. If no one is making a sacrifice somehow by working, a city cannot stand on its own. This somehow reminds me of how would the world be without the internet. I mean how are we going to function if we all decide, to have no internet for a day or something? I believe that would be a catastrophe because somehow, almost everything in our lives is linked to technology.

 2.    My Dystopia

'The Imperial Crown Prince finds out that the Empyrean Token is lost. This fact freaks him out because this token united the Imperial Palace with six other Kingdoms, which serve as their own clan and have their own rules. After finding out that the Empyrean Token is fake and the Imperial King’s passing, the whole world is in an uproar and this creates havoc because every kingdom wants to rule the world.'

I'm going to concentrate on writing about a world that degenerates due to avarice and the death of its king.

3.    Station Eleven discussions:

a)    The Starship Enterprise model is one of the items that survived the pandemic and the book that Kirsten carries with her everywhere. These items create hope for the people that were left post-pandemic as a remembrance of their loved ones and their past life. This also traps them in the past and makes it hard for them to move on with their future endeavors. The comic world provided an escape place for its creator. It offers her a place to vent out her frustrations that she kept bottling up every time. Even if the pandemic is over, it appears that the survivors are still far from a state of peace. There was more bad, which led to many people defending themselves by killing others. Even if everyone yearns for peace, the corruption in the modern world is like that in Station Eleven, since it never ends.

b)    Following their departure from St. Deborah, their companions Dieter and Sayid go scouting and vanish. It doesn't appear that they struggled or were pulled along. Slowly, another individual vanishes, and everyone starts to be extra wary. The missing persons worry Kirsten, especially Dieter, whom she considers a family member. The road becomes even bumpier, and August and Kirsten come across a house that has not been touched by anyone. August finds the Starship Enterprise model, while Kirsten hopes to find a copy of Dear V., which is a book written by Arthur himself.

c)     Jeevan comes to the realization that without his brother, he feels cut off from the outside world because his only kin committed suicide. He understands that people are interdependent, society runs on people, and without people, there isn't much one can do. He often tells himself that he must continue walking in order to remain sane.

d)    The memory provides both comfort and grief to the people who have lived. The memory provides them comfort because they remember their days with their families and the life, they had which brings some smiles to their faces. The grief is the fact they have trapped themselves in those memories that they cannot move on post-pandemic. The pandemic also killed almost everyone they knew and now they are left with the difficulty of adjusting by themselves and fending for themselves in the ‘new world’. Mandel is showing that even though memory can be vital to bring one comfort, it can also bring pain and grief to the person who wants to move on with their lives.
